i’d be ecstatic too ! (but then i’d probably fall through the ice and disturb the fish or end up as their food)
on second thought, maybe i shouldn’t try this, Alun !
Something I’ve always thought about doing but did not because I was afraid I would look silly.
I do know some guys who say they fish around ice-out, casting flies onto the edges of the ice and slowly bringing them back. They (the flies) fall into the water and are hit almost immediately.
You’re right. What was I thinking? No one with a fly rod would ever do anything silly!
Sorry for being unclear; the cast is made from open water or shore, to the ice, so the retrieve brings it back into the water. Only the fly gets dragged over the ice, on its way to open water.
Who needs to sight fish?! The force is strong in this one. Excellent video and he was ecstatic when the fish came out……..it was nice fish.

fly fishing can’t be silly. geez….
fishing over ice edges: hmmm, that means dragging the fish over ice if you hook up. i’m not too crazy about that.
