as alluded to in yesterday’s post Double Tapered vs Weight Forward Fly Lines – Which is really better?, there’s an enormous amount of let’s say, less than informative information available on the net when it comes to explaining this or that about fly fishing, fly casting and basically fly-anything.
here’s a real gem in the rough in the matter. the poor guy is so lost at attempting to teach us something that he doesn’t know. it would be sad if it wasn’t so funny…. enjoy !
btw, it’s this.

and to get a little more technical, a taper is:
taper |ˈtāpər|
noun:
• a gradual narrowing: (click the link at the top of the page for Bruce Richards’ basic explanation of mass, weight distribution and other goodies and how they affect a fly line’s performance).
verb:
•diminish or reduce or cause to diminish or reduce in thickness toward one end : the tail tapers to a rounded tip | [ with obj. ] : David asked my dressmaker to taper his trousers.• [ no obj. ] gradually lessen: the impact of the dollar’s depreciation started to taper off .
ORIGIN Old English (denoting any wax candle), dissimilated form (by alteration of p- to t-) of Latinpapyrus (see papyrus), the pith of which was used for candle wicks.
hmm, it turns out that thanks to Mr. DT we found out that the word taper finds it’s origins in candles and we can use it when chit-chatting about trousers so, i guess it aint all bad.

all this talk of DT vs WF is nonsence Marc. The best fly line in fly fishing is a level /paralel/ fly line, period.
that’s right. let’s start a business !
yeh, based on a proper Modern Fly Line Code – a level line is the best!
i dare you to start this topic in the SL Tech section !
Is that what a fish out of water sounds like?
yes, specifically the flounder species.
“i dare you to start this topic in the SL Tech section !”
feel free to quote me any time on this fascinating matter Marc
will do mate !
in fact i’ve been wanting to write a little something about the use of level lines for a while. (they’re actually popular in france…. )
off to fish with the Hot Torpedo !
Fine ! Im talking exactly about a made in France level fly line!
yes… i’ve been doing a lot of experimenting with LL just to understand what it’s about. the conclusion is that it’s for people who want to limit their fishing possibilities but mostly for those who want to limit their brain activity… :-p sorry…
Must visit Big Fish Tackle and get one of those two for the price of one, economical fly lines without weight at the front, even if they’re more expensive although they’re not. It’s just too easy to video shit these days.
now now, Andy. we shouldn’t be too harsh !
after all, for all we know his family might have been taken as hostages and he was forced to recite these lines at gunpoint.
That would be about the only justification for his delivery… FAIL

I can easily put you back on the right track Marc, showing you otherwise. we just should do some fishing together, do not be afraid, you wont need any protective helmet for that matter
, Im THAT good with the heavy nymphing stuff !
nymphing ? that’s different. besides, you don’t need a fly line for that.
the frogs are using the level lines for dry-fly and weightless nymphs. they think it gives a more delicate turnover and presentation…
anyhow, about the fishing together thing, yes !
they are using it with dry flies and unweighted stuff, becase they dont have to change the line when switching from heavy nymphs. As for the delicate presentation the leader could be fine tuned too according to the line in use me think.
maybe, but i still think they should be:
- shot
- or take up tenkara
(preferably both)
shot you mean like in film making:)
yes, war movies !
