a loop too tight

too often touted as the ‘nec plus ultra’ in fly casting, the ultra-tight loop can sometimes have its disadvantages as seen in Niklas Erikson’s video below. the image isn’t of best quality but we can clearly see the arrow-point loop-face consecutively collapse and reform seven times by the time the line has fully turned over. (ok, it doesn’t turn over very well but hey, this is championship-level distance casting… :mrgreen: )
kidding aside, this is a fascinating example of loop propagation study. of special interest as well is watching the caster’s movements throughout the delivery stroke. that’s about as ‘Oooomph‘ as Oooomph gets.

    • couldn’t say Craig because i don’t know this line (the company was brought up on SL but it was a total stranger to me and i forgot what it was)
      Lasse could probably tell you more as i think he was there but since i kinda told him to bugger off you’ll have to ask him yourself. :mrgreen:

    question: by hitting too soon means hitting with some slack.
    couldn’t that in turn make for the weak but very pointy loop ?

      Don’t know where my second comment went…
      Yes, hitting to soon means kinda slack, think of it as creep, but with intent 😉 there’s also what appears to be a bit too much overhang (ccheck aitors clip with beadchain and overhang) and the loop looks to be sideways too… Don’t think it’s too tight 😉

  2. it sounds a bit ‘givingupish’ but here’s a comment on this video from Merlin on SL.
    “The video provided by angil is very interesting. Up to now nobody has been able to explain the strange behaviour of tiny loops, which tend to show up a dolphin nose (even in the scientific community). This phenomenon can be created in falling chain tests for example. In this cast, there is a succession of tricky shapes at the loop level, but the exact origin of that is not yet identified.”
